Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam)
What is Glulam?
Glued laminated timber (glulam) is an engineered wood product and a member of the mass timber construction family. Glulam has an extensive history, first being used in the late 1890s and early 1900s in Europe. In the U.S., one of the first glulam structures to be erected was a USDA research laboratory located in Wisconsin in 1934 – it remains in service to this day!
- Multiple wood laminations called "lams", bonded together with industrial strength adhesives.
- Lams are glued with grain running parallel - key to the legendary strength of glulam.
- Glulam members are curved, cut, and milled to desired shape and sizes.
- Preservative treatment is applied before the gluing process if required.
- Members can be factory stained and sealed as required.
Where is Glulam Used?
Glued laminated timber is ideal for multiple building types and applications – both interior and exterior. Glulam can be made into a variety of members to match project requirements. Beams, columns, ridges, trusses and arches are all possible with glued lamianted timbers. This includes unique custom items such as curves or dual radius arches.
